unveiled preliminary specifications of three technologies that could
become the future standards for encryption of storage devices, hard
disk to the USB key. Bringing together specialists from storage such

The ESA was kind enough to break down the data further, showing us
that we spent $11.7 billion on software alone, a 22.9% jump
year-over-year. A lot of the sales, both on the hardware and software
side, can be traced back to December, where consumers spent $5.3
billion, breaking the coveted $5 billion mark in a single month for
the first time.

"While industry growth has not continued at the blistering pace we saw
during the second and third quarters, December's 9 percent increase
over last December brings the year in 19 percent ahead of last year,
and sets a new record for total industry sales," said NPD analyst
Anita Frazier in an e-mail statement.

December marked the first time that the gaming industry's revenue
topped $5 billion in a single month, she noted. In comparison, it took
all of 1997 to hit industry sales of $5.1 billion.

While the Wii, with its easy-to-use motion controller and playful
titles, has been basking in the spotlight since its 2006 launch,
Nintendo's portable DS was the best-selling gaming system in December,
topping 3 million units. The Wii, meanwhile, sold about 2.2 million
units, up roughly 5 percent from November's levels.

Net Neutrality: Google unveils M-Labs

Google has to make a series of tools known as M-Labs (Measurement
Labs) to enable users to analyze the traffic of their ISP.

On both sides of the world, the lobby of the cultural industry are
trying to put pressure on governments to implement a policy against
piracy. In some countries, one of the first steps is filtering through
the Internet service provider. Thus, at the end of last month,
Australia, Senator Stephen Conroy has decided to implement a series of
tests regulating ISPs. Europe is certainly not immune. The site of
BitTorrent file-sharing is blocked in Sweden and Denmark, TV 2 is the

Besides piracy, some ISPs are trying to block traffic for their users
to limit their bandwidth charges. By pointing the finger aging

Samsung Develops World’s Highest Density DRAM

Google Launches Measurement Lab

Google has launched an effort called Measurement Lab that is aimed at
making it easier to measure how ISPs manipulate subscriber Internet
connections, Google chief evangelist Vint Cerf, co-inventor of the
TCP/IP protocol that underlies the Internet, announced Wednesday.

When an Internet application doesn't work as expected or your
connection seems flaky, how can you tell whether there is a problem
caused by your broadband ISP, the application, your PC, or something
else? It can be difficult for experts, let alone average Internet
users, to address this sort of question today.

Last year we asked a small group of academics about ways to advance
network research and provide users with tools to test their broadband
connections. Today Google, the New America Foundation's Open
Technology Institute, the PlanetLab Consortium, and academic
researchers are taking the wraps off of Measurement Lab (M-Lab), an
open platform that researchers can use to deploy Internet measurement
tools.

Researchers are already developing tools that allow users to, among
other things, measure the speed of their connection, run diagnostics,
and attempt to discern if their ISP is blocking or throttling
particular applications. These tools generate and send some data
back-and-forth between the user's computer and a server elsewhere on
the Internet. Unfortunately, researchers lack widely-distributed
servers with ample connectivity. This poses a barrier to the accuracy
and scalability of these tools. Researchers also have trouble sharing
data with one another.

Windows 7 less annoying, but also less secure?

Microsoft said on Tuesday that regular PC users will be able to test
out a "beta" version of Windows early next year.

Windows 7, the forthcoming operating system, will let users choose to
see fewer alerts and warnings from their computers. Rampant
notifications and pop-up windows alerting people to potential security
risks has irked many users of Windows Vista.

"We had all the best intentions of helping to secure the PC platform
even more, particularly for novice PC users who needed to be
protected," said Steven Sinofsky, a senior vice president in
Microsoft's Windows group.

Sinofsky didn't back down from the major changes in Vista responsible
for the rise in alerts, but he did acknowledge that Microsoft needed
to work earlier and more closely with outside companies to avoid a
similar mess in Windows 7.

"Despite the difficult change we introduced, we did move forward the
ecosystem, making it more secure for end users," he said.

With Vista, Microsoft made some significant design changes to the way
windows and icons look, and also to where certain features and
functions are stashed in the system.

Windows 7 keeps some of those changes, but tosses out others. In an
interview, Julie Larson-Green, a Windows vice president, offered one
small example: Microsoft took the "add printer" feature out of the
quick-access Start menu, but after users complained, the company is
putting it back in Windows 7.

Intel : First Xeon Processor with Eight Cores

jobs as Japan Inc. buckles under the strain of the global economic
crisis.

NEC Corp. said it was slashing 20,000 jobs worldwide by March 2010 -
half of them regular workers - as it sinks deeper into the red. About
40 percent will be in Japan and the rest overseas, NEC president Kaoru
Yano told a press conference.

Hitachi Ltd. said it would shed up to 7,000 jobs as it forecast a net
loss of 700 billion yen (7.8 billion dollars) in the current financial
year to March. It will try to move full-time workers around within the
company to minimize job losses, company president Kazuo Furukawa said.

"We will take various measures but may not be able to avoid cutting
some regular workers," he said.

NEC announced the job losses after saying it expects a net loss of 290
billion yen (3.2 billion dollars) in the year to March as recessions
in major economies from Japan to Europe and the United States hammer
demand.

"It is regrettable that we have to announce such a big downgrade,"
Yano said. "We must cut waste."

Computer maker Fujitsu Ltd. said its net losses ballooned to 36.1
billion yen (403 million dollars) in the nine months to December, and
forecast it would end the year to March in the red.

"I have absolutely no confidence in the fiscal year 2009," Fujitsu
chief financial officer Kazuhiko Kato told reporters. "I have no clue
what the outlook will be."

Google launches offline mode for Gmail

If, like some members of the Mobile Computer team, you find yourself
increasingly reliant on Google's Gmail service then the company's
latest announcement will be very welcome – you'll soon be able to work
with Gmail offline.

This might sound a rather retrograde idea in a connected world but the
point is that with mobility comes a reliance on wireless connections
and if you're a devotee of Gmail's webmail interface, then you'll know
it's useless without a line to the web. But not any more. More after
the cut.

Google is currently rolling out a new Labs feature – Offline Gmail. It
uses Google's Gears technology to download a local cache of your Gmail
folders and contents. If you lose your web connection, Gmail
automatically switches to using this cache, allowing you to continue
working – replying to messages, starring emails for later attention,
applying labels – without concern for when your device will next be
online. When a net connection is once again found, Gmail will
automatically synchronise the local cache with its servers.

The Offline Gmail feature even has a 'flaky connection' mode, which
relies on the local cache most of the time, synching automatically in
the background. In theory, at least, this should speed up everyday use
for those whose net connections are unreliable.

Windows 7, Mac OS make gains

The Mac OS is now hovering around the 10 percent mark among operating
systems accessing the Web.

In its Operating System Market Share report for January, Web metrics
company Net Applications showed the Mac OS at 9.93 percent, up from
9.63 percent in December. The iPhone also trended upward to 0.48
percent in January, from 0.44 percent in December.

The biggest winner in January, however, was the iPod touch, whose
"explosive" growth in December continued unabated after the holidays,
growing 37.5% to reach a 0.11% Internet share...That means that more
than one out of every 1,000 Web hits in January were made from iPod

Use of Windows 7, meanwhile, surged in January after Microsoft
released the public beta of the operating system, the follow-on to
Windows Vista that's due sometime around the end of 2009. The beta
became available January 10 (though not without some stumbling), up to
which point Windows 7 stood at about 0.04 percent. Through most of the
rest of the month, it fluctuated at between roughly 0.12 percent and
0.15 percent. It closed out the month with a jump to 0.23 percent on
January 31, according to Net Applications' breakout on Windows 7.

Microsoft confirms: no beta 2 for

operating system, planned for two successive beta versions, it does

Netbook Sales are on the Rise, but will that hurt

Netbook sales are on the rise, but is it really a good thing? Do
consumers know what they are getting? And is the PC industry really
benefiting from this wave of new found netbook momentum?

According to leading market research company The NPD Group's retail
tracking service; laptop unit volume increased more than 23 percent in
December to 1.9 million units. That growth was propelled by netbooks.
Without netbooks sales laptop PC growth would have been just 9 percent
in December. For the full year laptop sales growth was 21 percent with
netbooks and 16 percent without them.

Netbook sales ramped up during the year. In the first half of the
year, netbooks accounted for less than 1 percent of laptop sales.
While that number rose in third quarter it remained less than 2
percent. Only in fourth quarter, as products became more available and
began to reach the shelves of the major U.S. retailers, did sales
become significant. By December, netbooks accounted for 12 percent of
unit volume, their highest total of the year. Nearly 50 percent of all
netbook sales for 2008 occurred in December. The impact on overall
laptop ASPs was significant. In January, laptop ASPs were $861, by
December they had fallen to $740. Without netbooks price erosion in
2008 would have been much smaller as non-netbook ASPs were $795 in
December compared to the $861 at the start of the year.

So are netbooks cannibalizing the market or just making a commotion?

"Without netbook sales, the laptop market grew 16 percent in 2008,"
said Stephen Baker, vice president of industry analysis at NPD. "That
16 percent non-netbook growth likely indicates about 50 percent of all
December netbook sales were incremental and about 50 percent were
cannibalistic.

potential, a lawyer would have formed a team of 300 people (experts,
lawyers, hackers ...) to sponsor several operations. One of these
virtual groups would have diverted 25 million financial transactions
directly in Ukraine.

Perhaps even more impressive, one expert says that the year 2008 was
truly the beginning of the cyber-war, especially when tensions between
Russia and Estonia, which saw its saturated networks denial of service
and electrical infrastructure outage. "2008 was the year of cyber-war
and showed that it is possible to make a country vulnerable in a few
minutes [...] it's like a virtual revolution, Russia had embarked on

Internet Explorer, including the latest IE8 betas and the existing
stable IE7, are still losing market share to its "alternative"
competitors. Microsoft has been eager to push IE7 and more recently
IE8, trying to convince people to use the beta browser in an obvious
attempt to keep their dominance from slipping further. It's not
working that well for the software giant as December saw the overall
IE share dip down to below 70%, which is still a big majority
nonetheless.

Some of the recent losses are being attributed to the diminished usage
of Internet Explorer in the workplace. While we've been calling IE to
be broken for years now, typically businesses and institutions adopt
new software more slowly.

The losses IE has suffered amount to around 10% for the whole year and
represent gains across the board for others, namely Firefox, Safari
and Chrome. All three of these browsers have gained in December with
Firefox exceeding 21% and Chrome coming in above 1%. These aren't
localized figures, and we've seen statistics in the past that show
actual usage of browsers can vary wildly by what region of the world
people are in. Another very worthy competitor Opera seems to be flat
in terms of market growth.

Internet Explorer's drop of seven percentage point since February last
year is a continuing trend. Microsoft lost over nine percent of
browser market share in the preceding two years.

Most of IE's drop in the past year has been in Internet Explorer 6,
which fell from 30.63 percent last February to 19.21 percent this
January. Internet Explorer 7 has gained market share overall over the
same time period, rising from 44.03 percent to 47.32 percent.

NetComm says it ‘raises the bar’ with its prototype

broadband communications devices, says it is preparing to launch what
it claims is "the world's first 21Mbps embedded 3G router with all the
bells and whistles" with the looming launch of 21Mbps networks

Showcasing the design of its prototype 21Mbps HSPA+ wireless router
(3G21W) at the GSMA Mobile World Congress in Barcelona last week,
NetComm says that with the imminent launch of 21Mbps networks, it is
working with partner company, Sierra Wireless, to launch its prototype
211mpbs mobile broadband router.

NetComm's Managing Director, David Stewart, claimed that "when
launched, it will be the first embedded router of its kind to operate
at 21Mbps using the HSPA+ (evolved high speed packet access) standard,
as well as being a fully-functioning 11n wireless router with four

Ubuntu founder Mark Shuttleworth revealed plans Friday for Ubuntu
9.10, which will be codenamed Karmic Koala. The developers plan to
bring cloud capabilities to Ubuntu's server edition, boost startup
performance on the desktop, and continue work on the distro's netbook
flavor.

Ubuntu adheres to a time-based six-month release cycle. The next major
release—version 9.04, codenamed Jaunty Jackalope—is moving towards
feature freeze and is scheduled for launch in April. Ubuntu 9.10,
which will be the next release after Jaunty, is planned for October.

The Ubuntu server edition, which was initially launched in 2005, has
been steadily gaining ground in the enterprise, but still lags in
adoption behind competing offerings from Red Hat and Novell.
Canonical, the company behind Ubuntu, has been investing considerable
effort into making Ubuntu a first-class server distro. During the
development cycle for Karmic, Canonical aims to strengthen the server
edition by introducing enhanced support for cloud computing.

One plan is to create a set of standard Ubuntu server Amazon Machine
Image (AMI) profiles that will provide a starting point for creating
specialized images. This will help to simplify deployment of Ubuntu on
Amazon's EC2 platform. The developers also intend to integrate support
for Eucalyptus, an open source framework for implementing a
self-hosted elastic computing cluster. The Eucalyptus project, which
is developed by UCSB, will enable organizations to get many of the
advantages of elastic computing in their own data centers, including
the ability to scale down power consumption when load is low.

"A savvy Koala knows that the best way to conserve energy is to go to
sleep, and these days even servers can suspend and resume, so imagine
if we could make it possible to build a cloud computing facility that
drops its energy use virtually to zero by napping in the midday heat,
and waking up when there's work to be done," Shuttleworth wrote in a
mailing list post. "No need to drink at the energy fountain when
there's nothing going on. If we get all of this right, our Koala will
help take the edge off the bear market."

Microsoft Gazelle: a new browser

The engineers of the Microsoft Research laboratory recently published
a report on a concept called Gazelle, an application midway between
the browser and operating system. For this project, the team was
inspired by Chrome and how the Google browser assigns a new process
for each tab.

With Gazelle, researchers have developed a new architecture by
leveraging browser security that offers more control over each
resource browser. This is the kernel, the heart of the application,
which is responsible for managing communication between the various
components of the browser (eg plugins).

Hitachi GST Strategically Expands

Hitachi Global Storage Technologies (Hitachi GST) today announced that
it has agreed to acquire Fabrik, Inc., a privately-held supplier of
personal and professional storage solutions. Fabrik, whose leading
storage brands include G-Technology and SimpleTech, strategically
positions Hitachi in the fast-growing external storage business.

Industry analyst firm IDC expects worldwide personal storage device
shipments to grow from approximately 52 million in 2008 to 123 million
in 20121. Financial details of the transaction were not disclosed.
Closing of the acquisition, which is subject to customary conditions,
is expected to occur early in the second quarter of 2009.

Fabrik's business will continue intact and form the core of Hitachi
GST's newly-formed external storage business. Hitachi GST will fully
support the G-Technology and SimpleTech product lines, building upon
their success and differentiation in the market. The combined company
will also leverage operational, technical and product development
resources, distribution channels and global reach to accelerate
delivery of a full portfolio of traditional hard drives, solid state
drives and branded personal and professional storage products.

Norton now protects children!

Known for its utilities, security, backup and optimization, Symantec
now looks for solutions of parental control. To avoid the pitfalls of
any security, the publisher said California seeking a more
comprehensive response to the problem of protecting children on the
internet. To do this, it just created the Norton Family Online
Advisory Council, bringing together doctors, writers and other experts
in the field. This study group aims to develop appropriate tools,
promoting understanding and dialogue between parents and children.

In this regard, Symantec has launched Norton Family Online still in
public beta. This service is currently offered free of charge and
available only in English. Not claiming that a simple inscription on
the site of the publisher, it is composed of an administration
parental line and a control software called Minder Safety to install
on the computer monitor.

Available for Windows and Mac, this utility allows you to remotely
monitor all Internet activities of one or more children. After
creating a profile, more or less stringent will be applied by default
with age. Scalable and customizable, it is possible to moderate in
detail the sites by categories, search filters, the instant messaging
session, access to social groups such as Facebook, but also time spent
on the internet. For added flexibility, the child stuck in these
activities will be encouraged to discuss with his parents and where
appropriate will seek permits on a case by case basis.

Windows XP to Windows 7 upgrades

IT shouldn't surprise many testers that Microsoft has shrewdly closed
the upgrade channel for users who will -- probably sooner this year
than later -- be making the switch to Windows 7. Many who had chosen
to steer clear of Windows Vista and hang on to Windows XP -- by all
rights, a decent operating system, at least for Service Pack 3 users
-- are pondering the nightmare scenario of having to upgrade to and
validate (which usually means, pay for) both Vista and Windows 7, if
it so happens that Windows 7 proves to be desirable or simply
necessary.

This led us to thinking: Windows Vista can run without being purchased
and activated, albeit for a limited time (usually 30 days). During
that time, it behaves as though it were a fully operational trial
edition (except for the Ultimate SKU, where several of the "Extras"
aren't available except after validating). But it doesn't take a month
to install an operating system; so what if a valid XP user could
simply borrow the promotional edition of Vista, if you will, to make
the skip over to Windows 7?

You can't download a trial version of Vista any more that runs on a
physical machine; the trial edition now is a pre-configured virtual
hard drive (VHD) that lets you test the applicability of your existing
software in a Virtual PC environment. So you can't make the hop to
Windows 7 via a downloadable version of Vista. And although you can
download a real, physical trial version of Windows Server 2008 (which,
after all, does have the Vista kernel), you can't install it as an
upgrade of Windows XP...just Windows Server 2003.

So it might seem pointless, at first, to say that the first tool you
need to make an XP-to-Win7 upgrade is a copy of Vista. But the key
here is that you don't need to activate Vista after you've upgraded
from XP to Vista, before you begin the upgrade from Vista to Win7.
This could give hope to XP users who do plan to purchase Windows 7;
all they need to do is borrow a friend's legitimate copy of Vista.

we intentionally used a very old, non-updated Windows XP Professional
virtual machine, with only Service Pack 1 installed. But very
importantly, Office 2007 was also installed. Because this was an old
VHD, we had to activate both XP and Office. But doing so at least
ensured us of an antique-like system in good working order, with real
working applications whose settings would need to survive the upgrade
as well. For the heck of it, we attempted a few tricks to see if
Windows Server 2008 could be made to install as an upgrade. Those
tricks failed, but not surprisingly. We also double-checked for the
availability of an evaluation version of Vista. No such version is
officially available from Microsoft's servers at present.

IBM Delivers Software to Ontario Universities

IBM and the Ontario Centres of Excellence today launched a pilot
project that gives university students, professors, and other
researchers anytime, anywhere access to some of IBM's leading business
software via cloud computing.

Cloud computing is an emerging compute model for delivering and
consuming IT capabilities as a service. This Tools as a Service (TaaS)
technology showcase, which enables researchers to have 24/7 access to
IBM's WebSphere Integration Developer and Rational Software Architect
over the Internet, is a major milestone for the IBM Canada Centre for
Advanced Studies and its partners in the Centre of Excellence for
Research in Adaptive Systems (CERAS).

Early adopters of this pilot include the University of Waterloo, York
University, Queen's University, University of Toronto, Carleton
University, the Ontario Cancer Institute, and developers from the IBM
Canada software lab.

This Tools as a Service initiative will provide the participating
research institutions with tremendous productivity increases, along
with cost, and energy savings. The researchers will have access to
some of the latest enterprise software securely without needing to
upgrade their own hardware systems or expand their data centers, and
without the need for on-site expertise to install and get the tools
running. TaaS provides the end user with sufficient computing
resources to use the software, regardless of the capability of their
own hardware. TaaS is able to preserve users' data from their last
session and restore it so they can continue from where they left off
with the software tools.

Windows 7 Free Upgrade Program: Now from

TechARP has updated the Windows 7 Upgrade Program schedule with some
slight changes. According to the new schedule Windows update program
will begin on June 28, 2009 instead of July 1, 2009, and users who
purchase PCs preinstalled with Vista between the dates June 28, 2009 -
January 31, 2010 are eligible for a free Windows 7 upgrade.

Microsoft will allow only 5 upgrade requests from eligible end users
(consumers or small businesses) to upgrade to Windows 7. This means
that a user with 12 upgrade coupons will have to visit the fulfillment
website at least 3 times to order all 12 upgrades. However, a maximum
of 25 upgrades are allowed for each qualifying end user's mailing
address. Customers with more than 25 PCs are encouraged to opt for a
Volume License.

Microsoft had already confirmed that customers can purchase upgrade
media and an upgrade license at a discounted price to move from
Windows XP to Windows 7. Users with a Windows XP Downgrade license can
also now upgrade to Windows 7. However, Microsoft to its corporate
customers, still recommends an upgrade to Vista before Windows 7.

Amazon.com's Engine Suffers

Amazon.com's product search engine appeared to malfunction early
Tuesday, with searches for well-known books and CDs producing no
results.

At approximately 2:30 a.m. ET, searches for "Stephen King" and other
terms on Amazon.com's bookstore returned the message, "Your search did
not match any products."

Comments by users on the Twitter microblogging service suggested the
apparent outage may have begun around 2:00 a.m. ET, with users noting
the Amazon.com search engine was not functioning properly.

The outage did not last long. By approximately 2:40 a.m. ET, the
search engine was back to normal. This time, a search for "Stephen
King" turned up more than 22,000 results in Amazon.com's book store.

More Than Half of Ex-Employees Admit to Steal Company

Symantec Corp. and the Ponemon Institute, a leading privacy and
information management research firm, today announced the findings of
a joint survey of employees who lost or left a job in 2008, which
revealed 59 percent of ex-employees admit to stealing confidential
company information, such as customer contact lists. The results also
show that if respondents' companies had implemented better data loss
prevention policies and technologies, many of those instances of data
theft could have been prevented.

Of respondents who admitted to taking company data, 61 percent also
reported having an unfavorable view of their former employer. The most
commonly identified kinds of records taken included e-mail lists,
employee records, customer information including contact lists, and
non-financial information. Although respondents were spread across
many different industries, the highest percentage of survey responses
came from the financial services industry.

Additional Survey Findings

53 percent of respondents downloaded information onto a CD or DVD,
42 percent onto a USB drive and 38 percent sent attachments to a
personal e-mail account.
79 percent of respondents took data without an employer's permission.
82 percent of respondents said their employers did not perform an
audit or review of paper or electronic documents before the respondent
left his/her job.
24 percent of respondents had access to their employer's computer
system or network after their departure from the company.

Vista RC1 Service Pack 2 Available

The arrival of Service Pack 2 for Vista is accurate, even though the
Release Candidate of this major update is starting to be sent to
testers. Normally, starting today, all those who have installed the
beta version will receive a warning to update to the new version.

At the end of January, an "Escrow" in the Release Candidate, ie a
draft had been sent to some testers. True RC is ready to be released,
and it contains the state 671 days to put together under one banner.

Microsoft trying out netbook processors

It sounds crazy to use processors designed for tiny netbooks in data
centers, with their potentially massive computing requirements, but
Microsoft Corp. is experimenting with doing just that -- and it's
finding that doing so may lead to cost savings.

A netbook processor uses one-fifth or one-tenth the power of a typical
server processor, offers about one-third the performance and is
cheaper than server processors, said Jim Larus, director of software
architecture for data-center futures, a unit within Microsoft
Research. That means that even though a data center would require
three times as many netbook processors, the power requirement would
still be lower than that of a setup with typical server processors.

At TechFest, an annual demonstration of some of the technologies that
Microsoft researchers are cooking up, Larus showed off a typical
data-center cabinet stocked with off-the-shelf netbook processors.

The cabinet doesn't require the large fans that are typically built
into such containers. The processors produce less heat because they
consume less power, in part because they offer less performance but
also because they were designed to require as little energy as
possible so as not to quickly drain the battery of a laptop, Larus
noted. The cabinet, which contained 50 dual-core processors, can be
plugged into a standard electrical outlet, he said.

Panasonic, Philips and Sony to establish One Stop

Panasonic, Philips and Sony are currently working with other Blu-ray
Disc patent holders to establish a one-stop-shop license for Blu-ray
Disc products. This license, which covers essential patents for
Blu-ray Disc, DVD and CD, will be introduced in the middle of this
year. The license program will be offered by a new independent
licensing company that will be based in the United States with branch
offices in Asia, Europe and Latin America. The CEO of the new license
company will be Mr. Gerald Rosenthal, former head of IP at IBM and
more recently CEO of Open Invention Network.
"By establishing a new licensing entity that offers a single license
for Blu-ray Disc products at attractive rates, I am confident that it
will foster the growth of the Blu-ray Disc market and serve the
interest of all companies participating in this market, be it as
licensee or licensor." said Mr. Rosenthal.
The three founding companies believe that the introduction of this
simplified one-stop shop product license will stimulate the growth of
the market for Blu-ray Disc products. Any holder of essential patents
for Blu-ray Disc, DVD and CD patents is invited to join this licensing
entity as a licensor and also as shareholder.
The fees for the new product licenses are US$9.50 for a Blu-ray Disc
player and US$14.00 for a Blu-ray Disc recorder. The per disc license
fees for Blu-ray Disc will be US$0.11 for a read only disc, US$0.12
for a recordable disc and US$0.15 for a rewritable disc. As a result
of the efficiencies obtained with the combined license offering, the
royalty rates for Blu-ray Disc products are expected to be at least
40% lower than the current cumulative royalty rates for individual
Blu-ray Disc, DVD and CD format licenses.

Google throws weight behind antitrust

Google Inc has added its voice to the case against Microsoft Corp as
the European Commission probes antitrust charges related to the
software giant's Internet Explorer browser.

"Google believes that the browser market is still largely
uncompetitive, which holds back innovation for users," Sundar Pichai,
Google vice president product manager, wrote in a blog post on
Tuesday.

Google introduced the Chrome browser last year, which has taken little
market share.

Google came out with its own browser, Chrome, last year and Pichai
noted that Mozilla, maker of the popular Firefox browser, had also
objected to the bundling of Internet Explorer with Windows.

Last year, a complaint by another Internet company, Opera, prompted
the European Commission to open an investigation into whether
Microsoft's bundling of its Web browser with the Windows operating
system had stifled competition and innovation.

In their preliminary findings, the European regulators concluded that
Microsoft had indeed given its Web browser an unfair advantage that
has been in violation of European law since 1996.

UK government backs open source

The UK government has said it will accelerate the use of open source
software in public services.

Tom Watson MP, minister for digital engagement, said open source
software would be on a level playing field with proprietary software
such as Windows.

Open source software will be adopted "when it delivers best value for
money", the government said.

It added that public services should where possible avoid being
"locked into proprietary software".

Licenses for the use of open source software are generally free of
charge and embrace open standards, and the code that powers the
programs can be modified without fear of trampling on intellectual
property or copyright.

According to some in the open source industry, the shift from
proprietary standards could save the government £600m a year.

Simon Phipps, chief open source officer for Sun Microsystems, said the
UK government's stance was part of a "global wave" of take up for open
source in governments.

"We waste a fortune on proprietary computer software because of paying
for licenses and promises up front and not demanding value," he said.

Mr Phipps said schools, government departments and public services
would have a "crucial freedom" because of the choice of whether to pay
for support and training when using open source software.

Symantec Corp. yesterday released the findings of its 2009 Managed
Security in the Enterprise Report. The study found that cyber risks
and actual attacks have grown significantly in the past two years and
are expected to continue to grow in the next two years. Nearly all
organizations surveyed (98 percent) have experienced tangible loss as
a result. This growth in risks and attacks comes at a time when IT
reports it is difficult to address the problems due to inadequate
budgets, increased regulatory pressures and staffing woes. As a
result, most U.S. enterprises (61 percent) are moving to adopt managed
security services. The study is based on surveys of 1,000 IT managers
in U.S. and European enterprises in January 2009.

"IT management in large enterprises is caught between a rock and a
hard place," said Grant Geyer, vice president of Managed Services at
Symantec. "Cyber security is a growing problem, yet organizations are
having trouble addressing the problem. Managed security services
provide a way for many organizations to close the gap and ensure that
their information and assets are protected."

Cyber Threats and Attacks Grow while Losses Mount

Cyber threats are growing rapidly. Nearly half of U.S. enterprises (46
percent) report that cyber threats have somewhat/significantly
increased in the past two years and are expected to
somewhat/significantly increase in the next two years. In fact, 88
percent of those surveyed saw cyber attacks in the past two years with
31 percent seeing attacks on a regular basis and 10 percent seeing a
large/extremely large number of attacks.

To put the problem in context, when asked to rank various risks in
order of significance to their organization, those ranking cyber
attacks as No. 1 or No. 2 outpaced all other risks by a wide margin

the Instant Messaging world. Google Talk still has no native client
for Linux. In fact, there is no really good and well supported chat
client on Linux that reliably does voice as well as video chat. Yes,
there are ways to make it work, but if they really worked, wouldn't
more people be using them?

TomTom joins Linux patent group

The Microsoft accused TomTom has joined the Open Invention Network, a
group of companies and patents shall be available for anyone who
promises no patent claims against Linux in them.

The Open Invention Network criticized earlier legal action against
Microsoft at the end of February TomTom put in motion, and claimed

way it displays Internet search results.

After months of testing, Google tweaked its technology Tuesday to
occasionally display longer descriptions of Web sites in response to
search requests consisting of several words. The expanded snippets
will contain three or four lines from Web sites instead of the usual
one or two lines.

The switch is designed to give Google's audience a better sense of
what information a Web site has even before users click on the link.
It's something lesser known search engines already have been trying to
do, either by posting longer descriptions or providing capsule
snapshots of the Web pages that show up in their results.

In another minor change, Google said it has improved its formula for
posting suggestions pointing to other topics that might be tied to a
search request.

For instance, entering "principles of physics" into Google's search
box will generate the usual list of 10 results on the first page,
punctuated by a group of links at the bottom suggesting eight other
related subjects such as "big bang physics." Now, however, Google
thinks it can do a better job of deciphering complicated search
requests and will highlight some suggestions near the top of the
results page instead of the bottom.

This clustering concept was popularized years ago by
IAC/InterActiveCorp.'s Ask.com and has since been copied by other
search engines. Google's upgrade was hatched by Ori Allon, who joined
Google in 2006 after selling a search startup called Orion to the
Mountain View-based company.

Even as it appears to be catching up to Ask.com, Google also may be
trying to stay a step ahead of its biggest rival, Microsoft Corp.,
said Danny Sullivan, who heads the Search Engine Land newsletter.

Microsoft has indicated it plans to introduce new ways to suggest

A startup founded by technology entrepreneur Steve Perlman says it has
developed a technology to deliver video games on demand, an idea that
threatens to eventually take consoles out of the equation.

OnLive Inc., Perlman's Palo Alto, Calif.-based company, planned to
unveil its technology Tuesday night at the Game Developers Conference
in San Francisco.

Seven years in the works, OnLive says it has developed a way to stream
video games without any lag that humans can notice. So the instant you
press a button to shoot something on the screen, the gun goes off.

This has not been possible before, because unlike with music and
movies, which can be compressed or put into smaller files that are
more easily transferred online before being streamed, video games are
interactive and require instant responses. That has meant video games
needed to be played on consoles packed with computing power, like the
Xbox or the PlayStation, or downloaded to personal computers that
could process some of the data that enabled games to run.

OnLive's technology gets around that limitation with a new form of
compression that lets its game servers communicate with players over
broadband connections in real time. This also means OnLive's service
can work on older computers, even those without a graphics processing
unit that has until now been an essential component of gaming. Through
a "MicroConsole" about the size of a cassette tape, OnLive's service
will also be available for television sets.

Microsoft unveils Windows Mobile Marketplace

Google has an Android Market for Android Phone, while Apple has an App
Store for iPhone. Last Month, the world's software giant, Microsoft is
also confirmed the plans to launch its Windows Marketplace for Mobile.
Recently, Microsoft has announced new details on how the developers
can build and sell applications for Windows phone through Windows
Marketplace.

Developers will have to pay an annual registration fee of $99, which
will allow them to submit up to five applications during that period,
with an additional $99 fee for every app above the limit. The software
giant will also provide additional testing and marketing support for
that fee, which seems reasonable for getting in front of millions of
customers, and will likely even serve as a filter to keep worthless
applications at bay.

Finally, in a clear dig at Apple's restrictive policies for their
store, Microsoft pledged "complete transparency throughout the
application submission process" as well as direct feedback. The store
is set to debut with the launch of Windows Mobile 6.5 in the fourth
quarter of this year.

Samsung Galaxy Tab Android-based Tablet Unveiled

Samsung joins a growing list of manufacturers of tablets with the Galaxy tablet, an extended S Galaxy comes in three versions this year.

Iomega recently announced the renewal of its range of external hard drives. The new Iomega eGo for laptops and desktops mark especially the adoption of SuperSpeed USB 3.0 connectivity.

With this new standard, which allows a transfer rate of up to 5 Gbps, the connection is no longer a limiting factor, contrary to USB 2.0. With a computer with a USB 3.0 port, in particular through an optional home adapter, with the PCI Express card (internal extension, 40 euros) or ExpressCard (notebook, 40 euros), the external hard drive is potentially as powerful (if not more) than the internal.

The SuperSpeed USB 3.0 Iomega eGo Portable Hard Drive for laptop home is 2.5-inch with 500 GB and now sold at retail price of 110 euros. The SuperSpeed USB 3.0 Iomega eGo Desktop Hard Drive is 3.5-inches and comes in one capacity or 2TB for 170 and 260 euros respectively.

Windows 7 Service Pack 1 beta releasing in July

On the occasion of the conference TechEd held in New Orleans from June 7 to 10, Microsoft has supplied details on the availability of Windows 7 Service Pack 1 beta.

The publisher has advised that a public beta of the first service pack of Windows 7 should be brought online during July. During the same period, Microsoft will deliver a Service Pack for another of its operating systems.

The U.S. firm also plans in effect from July 1 to broadcast service pack for its latest OS server, namely Windows Server 2008 R2. But as for SP1 Windows 7No specific date has yet been provided.

But what should we expect from this first practical updates for Seven? Overall, little enough, Microsoft has ensured that developments would be minor. The SP1 has given priority to a compilation of hotfixes released since the launch of the OS.

Adobe Flash : support for 3D graphics program

Adobe has confirmed its intention to add new 3D capabilities to its Flash player. These improvements will be unveiled in October at the Adobe Max conference.

Flash 11: Supports for 64-bit

Adobe has already introduced some 3D features in Flash 10 since 2008. But the publisher must go further then that happens in the 3D Internet browsers in other ways. Chrome, Firefox and Safari have opted for technology WebGL based on the OpenGL standard.

The other big news expected from a Flash 11 is that it will support 64-bit. Adobe has given no date for the release of this new version.

NTP Sues Apple, Google, Microsoft and More Over Wireless Email

NTP has decided to tackle large corporations: Microsoft, Apple, HTC, LG and Motorola are within the scope of a complaint by the company for use of patents in its intellectual property. Eight patents are involved, which define the transmission of electronic mail through wireless communication systems.

While NTP is considered a business that abuses the fraud trial of intellectual property, but it still forced RIM to pay $ 612 million in 2005 to halt proceedings in a similar case. NTP considers to be the inventor of the technology of wireless transmission of emails. All companies involved are builders of mobile devices, or publishers of software for wireless messaging.

Founded in 1992 by Thomas J. Campana and Donald E. Stout, NTP holds fifty patents in the U.S., mostly related to technologies of wireless email and antenna design. It would have granted licenses to its technology to Nokia, RIM, Visto and Good Technology, and had already filed complaints against four major U.S. mobile operators, AT & T, T-Mobile, Sprint and Verizon.

Facebook and Windows Live Messenger available in Outlook

The Social Outlook plug-in connector now supports networking site and Microsoft instant messaging in the 2003-2010 versions of Outlook.

Microsoft on Tuesday announced the availability of Facebook and Windows Live Messenger for its plug-in for the Social Outlook Connector.

Compatible with versions Outlook 2003 and Outlook 2007 messaging software, it is present by default in the new Outlook 2010. This tool displays a tab in the pane for "Persons" present in each email, which displayed a history of the last conversation exchanged on Live Messenger with the contact.

Integrated for Twitter soon?
The flow of news and images published by Facebook appear the same way. It is also possible to directly send an instant message if the contact is connected. "Now you can watch your social network while you watch your emails to stay in touch with your friends, family and colleagues", says Microsoft.

Social Outlook Connector arrived last winter starting at the propose updates accounts LinkedIn, MySpace, which was joined by Viadeo. Presumably other social networks (Twitter?) should be added as and when still remains a question.
